Queen of Katwe is the colourful, true story of a 10-year-old girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world changes rapidly when she is introduced to the game of chess. Life for Phiona Mutesi's family is a constant struggle. When she meets Robert Katende, a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated and immediately shows potential. Recognising her natural aptitude and the fighting spirit she has inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor Phiona, but her mother is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed.

'If you want to see film stardom look as easy as laughter, watch Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo in Queen of Katwe. The twosome give Mira Nair's rainbow-toned pick-me-up about a young Ugandan chess prodigy exactly the magnetic charge it needs to stick.'
