An Education (12A)
Swinging London in the early 1960's - this fascinating film finds the mark. A film about a schoolgirl and a society - both changing. Based on the journalist Lyn Barber's memoir of growing up in Twickenham and beyond... On course to go to Oxford, she encounters infatuation for an older man, infatuation with France, petty thieving, high society, jazz, suburban caricatures - all are given life in Nick Hornby's screen adaption. Carey Mulligan - playing the Lyn Barber character - creates a powerful performance, especially in the ability to transform herself from a classical English cello-playing schoolgirl into a svelte and debonair hanger-on of the smart London sets . She's apparently up for an Oscar. A cautionary tale for those planning an illicit trip to Paris.
