Departures (12A)
A failing symphony orchestra, in which the debt-ridden Daigo plays the cello, finally folds. With his wife, he returns to to his deceased mother's rural community to look for work. Desperate for employment, he answers an ad for work in what he thinks is a travel company - but it turns out to be for quite a different yet intriguing job. It is work that discomforts and is difficult to describe without humour or a frown. But his sagacious boss helps him realise that his job, unfairly maligned by society, can bring comfort to the living as well as the dead. ‘Departures’ won the Oscar for best Foreign Film in 2009 - deservedly so.
