In a German prison Jenny, a teenage girl, incarcerated for murder and filled with both hatreds and a great talent for the piano, is befriended by an aged pianist. Having discovered the girl’s terrible secret and her dreams, she decides to piano competition. Their journey is difficult and enlightening, filled with music, dreams, passions, denials, tantrums, threats that unlock the recesses of a murderer’s mind, as well as the nature of prison incarceration. Yet it is set against the reinventing of a keyboard talent, concluding with a taught, spirited climax which stamps Jenny’s character all over this amazing and powerful film. This is not a film which suggests that murder can be a way of funding an education at the keyboards – or is it?
