The Maid (La Nana) (15)
Raquel has worked for over 20 years as a maid in the same affluent Chilean household. She is regarded as one of the family but eventually the atmosphere becomes more oppressive and dysfunctional. Something has to give – both in the balance of the household and, by implication, in the Latin American social system. When her employers suggest a secondary maid to help her, the move is met by fanatical resistance and Raquel starts causing chaos in the household. Then, just as we're ready to see this surly domestic saboteur get her comeuppance, we come to understand the state of social and emotional dependence into which she has been drawn and are pleased to see her find an avenue of escape via... well, you’ll just have to come and see! The Guardian: “...this Chilean drama has been scooping awards across the globe .... Just when we're ready to write her [Raquel] off, this agile, low-budget drama turns things round and confronts us with our own heartlessness.
